Guillermo del Toro’s last project, the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation At the Mountains of Madness, sadly fell apart earlier this year, bringing about a collective sigh among horror fans everywhere. But there is good news on the horizon – del Toro is set to direct Pacific Rim, a Japanese-mecha-inspired giant monsters versus robots flick. You heard me right – MONSTERS vs. ROBOTS. This will be del Toro’s first time in the director’s chair since Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
Today, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the flick has a star – Charlie Hunnam. The British actor is best known for starring on Judd Apatow’s Undeclared and FX’s Sons of Anarchy. Rumor has it that Hunnam’s character will pilot one of the mechas (robots) used to battle an alien invasion along the Pacific Coast.
Only something as cool as this can help fans gets over the premature death of Mountains of Madness. Let’s all cross our fingers and hope that this project does not fall through, as well.
