Trainwreck Cinema: 'Deadly Prey' (1987)

Trainwreck Cinema is a feature dedicated to those movies that are so awful but you just cannot look away. We love 'em, we hate 'em, we can't live without 'em. Enjoy :)

If you have never seen David A. Prior's Deadly Prey, your life is simply not complete. I first discovered this gem as a random collection of clips on YouTube, which I adored. Then one day I found the full film on bootleg DVD at a horror convention and jumped for joy (thank you VHSPS!). It has been worshiped and quoted to death by me and my friends ever since. And thanks to love from groups such as Everything is Terrible and Mondo Baltimore, the film is swiftly becoming a cult legend on par with Troll 2 and The Room.

So why the fascination with Deadly Prey? It represents everything we love about bad action films. Just take a look at this extended "trailer" and you will understand immediately:

Ted Prior stars as Mike Danton, a Vietnam vet who now leads a quiet life with his wife, Jamie. That is until one day he is kidnapped by a group of mercenaries who train their recruits using live human targets. They set Danton and a few other victims loose on the grounds of their camp and hunt them. But they underestimated Mike Danton. In Vietnam, he was the best - and he still is.

Danton takes the mercenaries out one-by-one, like Rambo in denim cut-offs and a mullet. In addition to a badass hero who kills people with sharp twigs, we get not one but TWO hilariously bad villains - Col. Hogan (David Campbell) who once trained Danton, and Lt. Thorton (Fritz Matthews), Hogan's right-hand goon-in-sunglasses.

And like any great bad movie, Deadly Prey has hilariously cheesy dialogue, a ridiculous body count, and random, worthless characters (like Jamie's father played by Cameron Mitchell). There is so much awesome in this one movie. For anyone who loves bad movies (and if you don't, why the hell are you reading Trainwreck Cinema??), this is a MUST SEE.

The reason I chose Deadly Prey for this latest installment of TC is because director David A. Prior just started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a sequel, The Deadliest Prey. Go here to find out more and PLEASE donate! I desperately want to see this happen! Plus, Prior is offering cool prizes, including signed DVDs, posters, and even a shot at being killed by Mike Danton in the sequel! How awesome is that?! Prior even made a teaser trailer for The Deadliest Prey starring Ted Prior and David Campbell:

The original Deadly Prey is not available on DVD unfortunately but with an Internet connection and some creativity, it can be found. Share it with all your friends - they will thank you later.
