Fresh on the heels of the Lawless trailer, here we have another fantastic looking gangster film with a stellar cast. Gangster Squad stars Sean Penn as famous mobster Mickey Cohen. Among the LAPD cops trying to take him down are Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, and Giovanni Ribisi. Nick Nolte and Emma Stone also star.
Gangster Squad is directed by - oddly enough - Ruben Fleischer of Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less. Both were good comedies but is Fleischer up to the task of a heavy crime drama such as this? Between the incredible cast he has acquired and this stylish trailer, I say yes:
Sean Penn is an impressive 'get' but the uber-team of Gosling and Brolin as honest cops operating outside the law is almost too much to handle. That partnership reminds me of Crowe and Pearce in L.A. Confidential, a film I LOVE. Not to mention the familiar Los Angeles setting. If Gangster Squad is even half as good as that film, we are all in for a treat.
