What's New on Netflix? Part 2 - SCI-FI (7/2/13)

This is part 2 of 2. To read the first part, HORROR films added to Netflix today (7/2/13), click here.

As part of my continuing series about the ebb and flow of Netflix Instant titles, here are the latest in new genre films! These sci-fi titles were just added today:

Sci-Fi/B-Movie

Death Sport (1978)

In this Roger Corman-produced B-movie, David Carradine, Richard Lynch, and Playboy playmate Claudia Jennings compete in a deadly gladiator-style game equipped with laser dirtbikes. Need I say more?

Dinosaur Island (1994)

Schlock master Fred Olen Ray released this Jurassic Park rip-off a year after Spielberg's blockbuster. Plot irrelevant. Expect bad SFX and boobs. Lots of boobs.

Galaxy of Terror (1981)

Yet another Roger Corman-produced vehicle about a spaceship crew facing off with outer space horror. Look for appearances from horror legends Robert Englund and Sid Haig. Also, James Cameron served as production designer and second unit director on the film!

Not of This Earth (1988)

Traci Lords stars in this remake of a 50s Corman film about an alien who comes to earth in pursuit of human blood, using a young nurse for his transfusions.

Starcrash (1978)

Also known as The Adventures of Stella Star, this Italian sci-fi film is about a sexy outlaw smuggler and her alien companion. They are hired by the Emperor (Christopher Plummer) to rescue his only son. Look for appearances from Joe Spinell and David Hasselhoff.

Strange Days (1995)

This one is no corny B-movie, but rather a genuinely good sci-fi flick courtesy of director Kathryn Bigelow and writer/ex-husband James Cameron. Ralph Fiennes stars as a street hustler who uncovers a disturbing conspiracy in futuristic Los Angeles. Definitely worth a watch if you have not seen it.

Bonus! Exploitation:

Big Doll House (1971)

This was the only exploitation film I found joining the streaming ranks today, but it's a biggie, so I had to give it a shout-out! This Filipino-produced women-in-prison exploitation flick stars Pam Grier as one of a group of female inmates suffering abuses then taking revenge in a tropical prison. Jack Hill directs. Sid Haig makes an appearance. Definitely among the bigger titles in the WIP subgenre.
